A lot has been said and written about this topic – of course! It’s an important part of finding and hiring top talent who will perform at the highest levels.
All the highest performing people are high performing because they are tied into the why of the company. So before you think you can hire the best talent in your industry you MUST know your company’s WHY.
Let’s talk about the “Why” of your company. Why do you do what you do? Why do you produce, sell, manufacture, distribute, create, or whatever it is that your company does – Why? If you cannot answer this, it will be nearly impossible for your company to attract the right talent.
Our company has a simple Why – To positively impact companies in a way so that they can exceed their goals and achieve more than they thought was possible. Each day we look forward to how great the world WILL be once it is full of people who are excited and empowered by doing their life’s work! That’s pretty cool and keeps us motivated.
The first step is to sit down with your leaders and find out what your team feels is most important about what they do – this will give you the answer.
Start by asking them these questions:
1. Why did you get into this business?
2. What legacy do you want the company to leave behind?
Once you have your company’s Why, you can begin to find talented individuals who share the same Why (values). Matching their values with yours gives them the intrinsic motivation necessary to perform better each day. This will allow your company to grow and expand in the direction you want to go. It will also make it easier to develop these individuals. They will understand what you are trying to do and won’t be resistant to encouragement and feedback.
There have been countless times I have seen companies try to grow and fail quickly because they don’t have a grasp on why they do what they do. Take time out to sit down with the right people and discover your Why. Your Why should be at the top of whatever job description you use and be the driving factor as you seek out talented people to join your company.
Thanks as always for taking the time to read and learn – more on hiring great people in the next post.
