For the last decade or so I have been telling people to Go Forward every chance I got.I end my emails with “Go Forward!”, my blogs, anything I write or create I have always ended it with that statement – Go Forward!
Sounds great – makes sense – it’s simple to capture the meaning behind it.
But it’s not simple. So many people have a sense of what that means and might, for a moment, go forward. However, in order to do great things we have to be able to move in a forward direction even when the world, circumstances, life are all against us.
So how do we do that?I have to apologize, because I don’t really know.I am guilty at times of using “Go Forward!” only for a short time.I am an emotional person.I feel pain, I feel loss, I feel failure. I am human and I have set backs.
I recently celebrated my 45th birthday. Not old by any means. But I look back at my life and career and I see a lot of missed opportunities.Lots of missteps.Lots of steps backwards. Here is where my God given abilities might be different than others – my pains and losses are no different than yours or his or hers. How I deal with those, is different. And the steps I take next are different – forward, not backward.
I might get knocked back ten miles – that’s ok.Now I just need to go 11.
There is no way you can Go Forward! without first letting go of your past. To go where you haven’t go before, you must put away the old and find the new.Find new talents, new action, new rituals, new things that will work. This is hard to do and take patience and, as I mentioned above, courage.Everything you know will be telling you to stay comfortable – don’t listen to those voices. This new direction is just that – new.
How excited do you get when you get something new? When you were little all you wanted was a new toy.As you got older – new clothes – new car – new house. How about you change those thoughts and rediscover a new you.Image how that will feel when you accomplish something you never thought you could.By changing the way you go about the game, the result will be different, that I can guarantee.
Here are some closing points:
To Go Forward in the 2nd half, let go of the 1st half.If you are distracted or occupied by what was or what could be – everything that actually can be and is will slip by.Be truthful as to where you are.Plan where you want to go.Then figure out how you will get there and Go Forward!
