My team has asked me for about a year now to put my thoughts and observations about our craft down on paper. Those of you who have a similar personality style to me, can understand that “just putting things down on paper” can be a challenge. Well, here goes…
Being an entrepreneur for the better part of 20 years, I realized a long time ago that it’s not my “ideas” that make what we do successful; rather it is the people I surround myself with that have made our companies great. Now, we haven’t founded a Microsoft or an Apple, but we have had some companies that have had some strong impacts on our daily life.
When we first started we hired pretty much anyone who wanted a job – scratch that – anyone who had a pulse and could talk on the phone. Quickly, we realized that concept didn’t work. We developed retention issues, morale issues, in-fighting – it was horrible. We knew there had to be a better way.
We did our research and discovered Performance-Based Hiring – thank you Lou Adler. We tossed out the old school resume-based hiring and developed a way to hire people based on their potential and their talent. Their skill sets. Their motivators. We found that matching our positions with people who had the skills to perform at high levels made a tremendous difference. Discovering those skills prior to bringing an employee onboard was key. All that we had to do once the match was determined was to develop their skills further and to provide effective leadership, coaching, and enablement.
Through Performance-Based Hiring, we were able to:
- Seek out better performing people – hire them, develop them, AND retain them!
- Focus and maximize our interview process
- Refine our company objectives – based on real job needs rather than a 3-page job description
- Improve company morale and performance – effectively increasing our bottom line
The greatest thing about our process – it’s scientifically-based! Better yet, this approach can be used in any industry, with any sized company. Anyone can use it! Once we came to these realizations, we took a leap and started The Blakesley Group, where we do these things for people like you. Our motto now: strengthening our shared future – one company, one candidate at a time.
