Part 1: Who Are the Millennials and Why Should We Care?
By Nicole Riera
“Gen Y” “Generation Next” “Echo Boomers” “Millennials” – Just who are these folks, RIGHT?
Well pay CLOSE attention because they are the new workforce and, like it or not, they are coming to the table with different insights, different solutions, different plans, and, yes, different needs….. Okay maybe not all their needs are so different. But what exactly is it they want? Sure they want the same things many of us want; security, stability, income, a good future, but their approach is much different. They want you to show them that you want them – not the other way around (which is what many of the other generations are used to).
As a product of parents from the Silent and Boomer Generations, a Gen X-er who was on the cusp of the Millennials – I get it. I understand their needs maybe more than I’ll admit sometimes. They have great insights and an interesting way of looking toward the future. What you may fail to realize – terms like entitled and lazy are often affixed to their “type” – they are anything but. They WILL soon be running our organizations and changing the way we look at and do business. They move too fast, they want things done now. We need to start listening and finding ways to utilize their energy and enthusiasm to make the changes we need to our organizations. And maybe, just maybe, we can show them a few tips and tricks along the way.
When it comes to hiring this type of individual, Soft Skills will play a HUGE factor in respect to fit. As many in this generation still have a few things to learn, they are more than willing to do so for the right organization. One that values them, utilizes the correct tools, and will invest in their growth for the right results, WILL surpass their peers with an amazing talent pool.
Stay tuned for the next step in Preparing for the Millennials……
